Simple tactical game demo

Post by darksmaster923 » Sat Aug 22, 2009 3:59 am

I'm just releasing a simple game demo made with RF. Its just a tactical shooter with 1 map and 2 playable weapons. Very cliche objectives. It isn't very polished, and there are a number of weird glitches in the game. However, there are some cool features in the little minigame, such as weapon jamming, cool looking weapon movement, ironsights, basic squad movement, and different fire modes. That being said, here is the download link

http://filefront.com/14344711/DesertRaid.rar/

There are more controls than the usual shooter:
WASD = Movement
Left Mouse Button = Fire
Right Mouse button = Ironsights/Scope
Spacebar = Revive Friendly/Secure Objective
N=Tells Fireteam A to go to your crosshair
M=Tells Fireteam B to go to your crosshair
H= Squad Hold/Move
F=Change fire modes (M16A4 Only)
2=Throw Frag grenade

Minor details you might want to know:
If you are bleeding, running up next to a squadmate will automatically bandage you.
If a squadmate is down, he will sometimes be revivalable if it states what condition he has (Arterial Hemorrhage, etc). Then you can revive him
If your gun jams, you automatically unjam it.
Stay away from the IED, secure it from a distance
Easy is very easy, Medium is average, Hard is impossible. Keep in mind that this is a tactical shooter. 1 shot can easily kill you, so it might not appeal to everyone.
I think the sounds are pretty realistic.
The computer is the communication device.
That is the real US Army camo.

Glitches:
LOD actors vertices are not assigned correctly.
Sometimes, teammates hold position randomly
Teammates get stuck. Way too much

The sounds are from soundsnap.com, from BLASTWAVE_FX and SFX BIBLE.
Models are free to use, just give me credit. However, the computer model is from the the Spanish community site.

Enjoy

Well, they're ridiculously accurate, and they do everything you tell them to do. They do rotate strangely when you assign waypoints, and they don't really have squad tactics. But I guess thats your job to tell them where to go. I was originally going to let them take objectives, but it got pretty buggy. Why do you have to wait till next week?

School. I get extremely limited time on a computer on weekdays, and not much on weekends, till holidays.

As for the AI, pity, I was hoping there was a basic framework I could use for SB, but it's probably better if I do it from the ground up. IDK if I mentioned but I have big plans for the SB squad AI. I'll email you about it.

Eh I keep dying. On easy.
Anyways I didn't know about the revive thing, but as far as I could see you can keep playing after death, you just can't see anything due to redness or shoot. There aren't any health bars so I couldn't tell if I was close to death or not. I won't comment on the graphics. Where do you put the Objective thingy? Anyways I'll play some more.

EDIT
OK BTW the terrain sucks.
Anyway I got a lot further, although the teammates AI pathfinding sucks. And most of em died. Anyway I couldn't find the dirt road, then I got sniped from who knows where.

EDIT2
Ugh one of my squad members blew up all of us with one grenade.

EDIT3
And this building, you go along the side of the map from the start, and there is one guy in it, you kill him and the men around, and go in, and die INSTANTLY. And grenade explosions are small but kill you from quite far away( i accidentally killed most of my squad xD) And the grenades need to be thrown further. AND the respawn doesn't work, I had allies alive but it never works when I hit spacebar when dead.

The revive thing only works for your teammates. You run over to them, then revive them if the picture thing shows up. And that building is there the first objective is. The bomb. You don't get too close. Just look inside and press spacebar to secure. And there aren't any health bars. Or a real HUD. I actually found easy mode pretty easy lol. Just take it slow.

The thing with grenades is that they're about half a pound, so I didn't really let people throw them that far. The explosions poorly simulate fragmentation, so it ends up with doing too much damage in a large blast radius

Oh yeah and the white text was hard to read and went offscreen. Force recon was like that too. And the guns were quite large, which was slightly annoying. Otherwise it was good, good job man.

The main issue with text is a resolution thing. RF isn't really flexible with tthat, so you have to confine the text within a set resolution. Which I didn't do.
