RF pro crashing while previewing level

Post by Guest » Wed Jul 27, 2005 12:43 pm

I made a simple level then tried to previewing it and then... <CRASH>

I took some steps to correct this problem including udating my drivers, ect before posting but no improvement at all..

I checked the RF logs, but they do not indicate anything is wrong but just in case:

Its possible that your computer cant handle the default RF settings. Open d3d24.ini and cut some of the values in half. This solved my problem.

The only entities I have in a level right now is playerstart, playersetup, skydome, echaos, liquid.

I think you need the enviorment entity also.

Try to get ride of the skydome.echaos, and liquid. Then test with player
start, player set up, and enviorment entities.

If all goes well, add one of the three and test again. This should help you
track down the problem.

You don't NEED EnivorimentSetup, this is a rumor that is going around and around and doesn't stop.

Also there could be some other other problem: If you've got StencilShadows enabled(in the menu, i mean) and then start a Level with a LevelViewPoint( in the PlayerSetup Entity) of 0 you get a crash. Maybe try 1 as a value.

I have RF072, don't have that RF080 Test Build, so i am not sure if it could be that.
Everyone can see the difficult, but only the wise can see the simple.

I'll try to trobleshoot some more when I have some time available, in the meantime ill stick with RF701

Update on crashes

Post by Guest » Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:54 pm

I tried viewing my small level again without the liquid entity and it ran fine.. except the title screen flickered alot, so I tried to update my video drivers (7.7.7.2 geforce) and now the title screen totaly blanks out which is wierd.

any way of knowing what causing this?

to help tracking down that problem, I included the DxDiag info:

It's not a rumor, I've been around RF for years, so trust me. The level will run without an envirnment setup entity. But you have to set the number of lights used by Stencil Shadows in the EnvSetup or they will not function properly. also, without EnvSetup you cannot use framerate-saving tricks such as farclipping (and no, i didn't say fog) and actor LOD. EnvSetup also lets you set a number of things including gravity and screen-bobbing. You dont have to have it, but its necesary for anything more than a test level. Just like cut brushes, you can use them, but it's not advisable. besides that fact, the engine runs all of the checks whether it's in the level or not, so by bypassing it your only missing out on the advantages of having it and saving three clicks of the mouse.

I meant it was a rumor that you would need it. Some poeple say they 'suppose' that you need it. I just wanted to make that clear one time.

Errmmm...Do you have DefaultLightLevel enabled(try 128 128 128 for debug purposes)

I had this problem once too, and i think i solved it by deleting some files to get more room at the hard disk and then make it compile again...i think it was because of a hard disk error...
I know it sounds like stupid stuff, but it's true!!! Computers are very strange sometimes...Sometimes just typing another name for one and the same thing makes a difference...it's like they're thinking! uhhh....i'll get bad dreams...(now THIS is stupid stuff...sorry... )
