Modern Graphics effects (like in DOOM 3 and HL2)

Post by wackedoutbiker » Mon Jul 25, 2005 5:51 pm

I was just wondering if visuals such as parallax mapping and warped reflections will be possible with RF anytime soon. I have a few links to both to show you what I mean:

Parallax mapping:

A few images:

And warped reflections (images):

I couldn't find much on water effects like in the above images. But can the option be added to RF? (I just added pictures to give you the idea of what I would like)

And how about screen blur?

I just thought this image was interesting...

Soft-edged shadows would also be nice...but are not necessary.

This page also has some good effects, including a great example of parallax mapping and even a glowing donut (just kidding):

to the best of my knowledge, all of these use shaders. hardware t&l is a huge step towards getting shaders into rf.

WOW thats really cool! The only thing is, how much does that use the CPU? I mean, I like all that cool stuff but I dont want to see only people with uber pcs make and play games with RF.

in my experience with parallax mapping in an engine called Irrlicht, compared with normal mapping it only drops the frames by about 5. people with older pc's wont be able to display it, so, if coded properly, it would simply display the surface shaded normally.

Well, I have a 666 MHz processor in my comp, and it runs perfectly fine. In fact, I play Star Wars: Battlefront on it on the highest detail settings (minimum system requirements are 1 GHz processor and big video card and stuff) All I have is the big video card. (a Radeon 9600 128 MB)

Now if we can get Hardware T&L into the RF engine, I don't see how framerate will be a problem at all. In fact, it will be more than a fair trade-off if it improves my game's appearance! :D
