Wow, I thought it was only $1500 from one of the student discount sites "regular price". What a great deal I got! Its really $3,495?! Geese, I thought the $1500 price tag was bad! I saved a lot of money with my student discount. If anyone else is a student and wants software, this shows how valuable it is to look into a student discount.
So I saved $1,100 from Adobe for CS3 Web Premium and $3,111 from Autodesk! I saved about $4,211 dollars altogether!

Let's not distract from Madness' thread anymore though... sorry for the slight thread hi-jack!

*Edit, just an FYI my post about 3D Software on "Page 2" has been updated to reflect the correct prices. Sorry for the wrong information for the first post.

The UV maps on the blade of the axe does not look right to me. Other than that they look okay.

What are uv maps again?
The texture on the blade is of a metallic rock and it has been sperified.
I just cant seem to find any texture that says "Hi, I am heavy, sharp, and dangerous." that really fits for an axe blade.
I might go out and sharpen an axe and take a picture of it. that would also serve well for my other models.
Whats better in that case, big textures or small textures? fps was talking about that earlier.

Well this is an example of a skin with its so called 'UV map' :

Here are some simple examples of how highlights and a change in color tone can give the idea of depth and sharpness :

I could improve this but it came out pretty nice.
What do you think?
Straight blade machete.
I own one like it, i think it was cut poorly from a sheet of 1/2' thick steel or iron (possibly from armor tank plating). it weighs almost 70lbs.

Actually, I'm not trying to throw it back in your face or anything.
i know your trying to help.
But the only faces that don't have their own mapping, are on the front and back of the model.
that texture is just really light.

Hey, just stopped by quick during my leave of absence to let you know a HUGE IMPORTANT DETAIL ABOUT MAX 2008 STUDENT VERSIONS. They are licensed for personal instructional purposes only. Anything created for sny profit goes against the license. I got my copy today to be disheartened by the license. I still purchased it though as the student super pack comes with 3DS Max 2008, Combustion 2008, Motionbuilder 7.5 and Cleaner XL. All have the same student licensing warning on the package except for Cleaner XL.

So again the student version of Max has a license contingency on the box stating that it can not be used for any commercial professional or other for-profit uses. I have yet to read the full EULA as I am just about to install it.

I am still very happy with my purchase though, and there are no student restrictions on Web Design Premium CS3!

Nice models you have there too they are looking better!

Yea, fps had to help.
He helps me with my modeling because we have between classes together.

Like he said earlier before he edited his post, It was just a last ditch attempt to recover a model we worked really hard on.
We wont do it again.
Are you serious about that 3d's max thing!?!
I might just stick to milkshape in that case.
Oh well.
Can you post some models you can make in that program.

I'm sad to say it is true! You can only use student software for personal education. Any use of anything created with the software for any profit is a direct violation of the EULA. So my question is why is it $400 when there is a Maya Personal Learning Edition with about the same license FOR FREE. Thanks Autodesk... nice way to make use gamers pay to learn your software when you give out other software learning versions for free.

Anyhow, I am going to see if I can return my 3DS Max 2008 for a few reasons. First of all I tried to open Combustion soon after installation and it told me that my 15 day grace period has expired and I must register my software or close the program. 15 DAYS?! I had just installed it within the hour! Seems like someone else has already used my serial number! Along with this little mishap, the license agreement said that unless noted by Autodesk the program would be licensed for 1 year and I paid for the perpetual license. I am unsure of which license my software qualifies and so I hope to return this big mess. The entire installation process was a royal pain as they have done everything possible to prevent illegal copies from being made which is fine, but to make the installation process this rough, its too much. I hope I can get my money back. Maybe I will spend my money(if I can get it back) on trueSpace or gameSpace as I have found them to be my favorite modeler of choice from their demo versions. I wanted to keep 3DS Max even with its no profit license because it is the industry standard and I should learn it if I want to get a job in computer graphics, but this is too much hassle. I will go for general 3D knowledge instead and get the 3D program I like best.
