HALO's Bump Mapping....WOW!

Post by metal_head » Mon Jul 21, 2008 4:10 pm

During my holiday I was playing HALO (the first one) on my laptop,to take a look of the effects the game is using.I took 2 screenshots of the bump mapping in the game. And I wan to ask if this can be done in RF,becuase the bump mapping I know makes the textured brush look kind of wet and very shiny.

Take a look of the pics:

I think it's the specular map that's making it shiny. Try bump mapping without the specular map.

Here is a link to tutorials on how to create bump maps for Halo CE and they include some of the textures and bump maps, give them a try with RF.

OK,so here's what I did:
I downloaded 2 of the sample textures from the site, resized them and renamed them.
the base texture I renamed to BM0_wall.bmp and the bumpmap I renamed to BMB_wall.bmp.
I think it's OK now,but I'm not sure, because the texture comes out too dark.Maybe I'm doing something wrong, take a look of it.I uploaded the result picture and the textures.

what makes the texture so black? I have no idea...

well, from what I tried and read in theforums,I saw that RF doesn't support dot3 bump mapping on brushes :( ,it only supports enviroment mapping..but it's not the end of the world I can go on without dot3

that's enviroment bump mapping, not dot3,right? I need dot3 bump mapping for the ground or for caves in my game. :)

Why do you need DOT3?
Many Bothans died to bring you this signature....

I need it to make the ground of some outside levels, also I have a level in a laboratory, but before you reach the laboratory, you'll have to make your way through a cave and DOT3 would be a great way to make the cave's walls.Enviroment bump mapping only makes surfaces look shiny and wet..

Here, somo examples of enviromental mapping (i think that it is cool for caves):

http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 004gq6.jpg

Here you can see the Dot3 (not cool for brushes):

Well, if you want use dot3 for caves wall, you can use act walls and input on the level with StaticEntityProxy

yeah, the enviroment bump mapping looks good (where did you get thoose awesome textures),but the walls look wet and shiny, and I need something like the picture thewre,I'll try making the level and act model, but I'm not sure if that's a good Idea, because dot3 on 3d models, makes them pretty dark.
