Poly Count?

Post by Destron » Fri Aug 08, 2008 3:41 am

Hey guys,

Can somebody give me a quick run-down of how many polys would be good for different models for use in RF?

For example, what poly count would be good for a character model?

For characters I'd say 750, with no more than 1000.

My player models have 6000 polys aproximately, and it goes smoothly. I'd say it depends on your PC

It also depends on how many actors you have on screen at one time, how big your terrain is (in polys) and if you want it to be played on a different PC (ie. if you are putting out a demo or selling your game). Steven is right 750 - 1000 or therabouts is max.

I just think 750-1000 is just a little too small. Although it depends on how good you want your game to look. In my game, my main player model has 6328 polys (or triangles, I don't know) but I don't plan to have like 20 odd enemies in a single level. My game's gonna be little map after little map after little map. Might be a little unconfortable at times, but the graphics are really worth it. Plus, the camera's very near to the player, therefore I need more details on him.
I mean, obviously the game's not for a six-year-old Pentium three computer, but mine is a pentium 4 and it goes pretty smoothly with four different character of 6000 polys each

Also, it depends on the engine. You can have the most powerful computer in the world, but if you plop a 5000 poly model into Genesis3D, it probably won't run very well.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, now I know what I can work with.

It's also totally up to the level design. With very small rooms you can have high polygon counts. I wouldn't go as high as 6000, though. I think that's just overkill. You could have the same amount of details with like 2000 polygons and a good texture or a normal map. My characters have around 500 polys each. That way I can add more details to the environment which I think is much more important. You won't be able to see the enemies clearly until they are dead anyway since you're way too busy shooting them. :)
