You might want to give Misfit Model 3d a try. I tested it about 5 years ago when it was just released and it wasn't too impressive but I just gave it another look and would say it's comparable to Milkshape. I even find making skeletons and animations easier than Milkshape. It supports a lot of file formats so you can import your current project. I suggest you try the Development Release since it has a lot of new features.
