(no scripting experience) looking for tutorial or demo

Hello,
I am hoping to make either a 3rd person action game or a survival horror game. Yet I just don't know where to start! I'd really like a beginner's tutorial for setting up the game engine, or better yet, a game demo/engine that I can use.

Now for the fighting game, I tried downloading a demo called Dojo, but again, I don't know where to start, or even how to edit the aspects of this game. Might anyone give me some advice? Thanks very much
