Motion blurr???

Post by psYco »

It was sugested to me by a very close (if unworldly) friend, that it would add a beautiful depiction of art, in games (the red button story in particular reference) to have a slight ''motion blur'' I have fallen in love with this idea and now I beseach you my fellow developers of art and interactive marvels of time, lay your ideas of how the ''motion blur'' could be achived in our humble engien...

Thanking you kindly, teh_psYco at his most depressed, depraved and philisophical...

I have a movie showing some guy playing hl2 with a motion blue after affect applied and i must say it looks amazing. i would put it right up with HDR in terms of incresing immersion. It was not so much 'blurry' as it was 'smooth' feeling.

Neither can, to my knowledge, be done in RF.

MAJOR BUMMER(bummer means dissapointment)>>>> Ahhh well... Im still open to suggestions to anyone who can think of a way!

I was thinking mabey is it possible to make a filter on games made in RF? You know like have the game look like an old movie? Or have all the colors inverted or what not? I think that mabey that could be relatively easily worked into the graphics code, Oh theres an Idea for RF2! Can we have graphical filters built into the Irrilict engien? That would be soooo cool and like I have said I dont know too much about this engien and what its powers (irrilict i mean) but I will find out about it!

But yeah that would be a kick ass feature! I can see it now... Games that go black and wite for ''in game interactive cutscenes!'' like in ''XIII'' that game rocked and was soooo stylish! Yep that would be brilliant! A feature for graphical filters directly onto the 3D engien, that you could customize and set up! Ok this may just be a dream but is there any such possibility for such features on the new irrilict game engien?

Thanks alot!
the forever wishful thinking psYco!

It can be done...you just have to modify the Genesis engine to support it. OpenGL supports motion blur through the frame buffer. I'm not sure how to do it in DX7. DX9 you would use shaders.

Wicked aWsome CooL! Ummm so will RF2 use Shaders? And will that be in DX9, and will it run on OpenGL? And does any one here understand how to do this? Cause I ''get it'' I just cant see myself delving into the code of the irrilict engien or even the gennisis engien and turning this function on,

Thanks for the helpfull feedback! :D

Yes, RF2 will have shaders.

I apolagize. Paradox is right; it can be done, but it would require coding in the Genesis3D engine itself. Whenever I say something is not possible with RF, i mean vanilla RF unmodifified. Yes, if you change the code you could do it.

Andy has a point. in theory, you can do anything with RF, provided you are capable of modifying the engine to support it.

I've done dozens of quick fixes with RF's graphics. Everything from gloss mapping, to glow effects, to smooth lightmap shadows. there are a lot of little tricks with RF. that being said, even I can't see a way to fake blur effects in RF. It is a cool effect and i'd love to see it in RF, but for this one i think were just gonna have to wait for RF2.

Cool! well I was thinking of RF2 anyway since i dont want to spend all that time making these cool effects in RF1 when Ill have to start all over in RF2 especially when i know my game will only ever come out mabey 3-5 years from now so I am pretty sure itll be in RF2 or mabey that engien that other guy is workng on I forget his name!

Oh and as far as graphical filters? does any one know about that? You say you doe sum quik fixes in Genesis GD1? well it shoudent be too hard making the effect taht the whole game is in an old movie? you know wiht the flickering lines etc? well tell me what you think of the idea! and if you think its do able!

Oh and I also agree the possibilitys of RF are endless you just have to decide if the work is worth the effect or if it would be better to w8 for the better engien! I just cant w8 For RF2 Shaders and games taht dont look retro just because we cant harness the modrn tech of using ppls GFX cards! who CAN wait!

looking like an old movie might be possible. look into using animated overlays. you could make all your artwork in black & white and then use an animated overlay to get the scratchy lines effect. put a frame or two in the overlay that would be completely solid to give the effect of damage to the film reel. for the rest just make them transparent with some lines on them.

this is probably similar to how the effect would be done with shaders as well.
