I went to http://terrymorgan.net/download.htm and downloaded the demo071c.zip. I was expecting to just be able to start the demo and see it in action. Instead I just got the 4 folders demo071c, install, media and scripts. I thought to my self that I knew how to put the files in the proper directories in my RF folder so they will run. I did that. When I started the RFEditPro and opened the level and tried to compile it, it said "error compiling level". I clicked on the entities and the pawn in the editor and it said "unknown". Is this demo incomplete? Did I do something incorrect.
Could someone please fill me in on the details?
Demo doesnt work.

Patience and tolerance are the keys to the passage of knowledge. Even those that are the most knowledgeable started with many questions.
I think it has something to do with the 'headers'.
Open the level and go to Project -> Level Options.
You should see 'Headers Directories' there. If the box is empty click 'New' and then browse to the directory where a file called 'GameEntityDataTypes.h' is. Normally this is the 'source' folder in the RF folder. So the filepath in the 'headers directories' should be something like '<your RF path>\source'.
If there already is a path, just modify it.

I will try that.
When the demo was made, the person that made it had to pick the right folders and zip them up. Then when people get the demo they have to take the time to modify it. They have to set it up the the way that person that made it has thier RF set up. Then they have to point it to the proper source file. In this case I just read that other files have to downloaded from other sources to make it work.
Wouldnt it just be alot easier for everyone to zip up the entire RF folder that the demo was made in minus the un-needed files?
Are there any other demos that are like this? I jut want to be prepared.
Have a great day all.

#1. I'm not telepathic, I have no idea what you call yourWhen the demo was made, the person that made it had to pick the right folders and zip them up. realityfactory installation.
#2, at 26,500 connection, a full-blown RF install of 18MB
takes 3 hours, of course the ISP hangs up on me way before that, not to mention I have to pay for the bandwidth you use for free.
#3 make a 2nd copy of basic Realityfactory
All you have to do is put the /bitmaps in /bitmaps,
/scripts in /scripts,etc
Usually if they don't run, it's because RF editor doesn't know where your 'gameentitydatatypes.h' is, if they don't work then it's because the entities have changed since
I wrote the tutorials.
Everything worked at the time it was written.

steven8,
Thanks for the tip that will help a lot.
hike1,
Please don’t misunderstand. I appreciate what you and the other do here. I just didn’t see it with all its little details.
1) If people are to be on the same page it is a good thing for them leave all names of folders the same names as a default install or at least remember to specify when relaying an idea about what they are doing with theirs. Mine is all the default folder names. I didn’t specify. My bad.
2) I have been on broadband so long that I have forgotten how slow a connection can get. I am not familiar with File front. They seem to be a good service. Maybe I should have done my research to find out how much it is costing you before I pointed out what I thought was a valid thing. My bad #2.
3) I have 3 copies of reality factory that I am using and one back up. I didn’t see copy and paste as being intensive. When your plate is full any small thing can seem bigger. I didn’t think of that. My bad #3.
Other people generally are not telepathic either. It would really speed things a lot if you would drop a note in you demos with all the details on how to get them to work. That way there would be no excuse for some like me to waste forum space and your time with questions that wouldn’t then need to be asked.
You guys do a good thing here. It seems that there must be something that you get out of it. If Reality Factory makes it to the pros that would be a great resume item. Not to mention bragging rights. !! Companies would then scramble to hire the people that were involved with it. Even though you don’t get paid for this it still opens doors to make your life easier. A lot people don’t see how important your performance here is. There is a lot more pressure that most people see. Not just in the work but in the fact that it will be seen by others that can influence your future. You have to watch your facts and your people skills and so on. I don’t try to make that harder for you. I although really am putting FR through the paces. A lot of things I have found out on my own and some things I have questions about. I seem to have more questions because my games are all I work on because I can’t get out much. I work on mine all day so I run into more things to ask about then people that have lives. That’s why I have so many posts here, its not that I ask about everything. I just do more so I run into more. I have learned a lot from you people and a lot on my own. I plan to learn more.
I’m not trying to be a burden. I just want to learn.
I have gotten decent at 3D modeling and texturing. I have discovered a lot of tricks to build in RF on my own. If there is anything that I can do help you for a change just let me know.
Later!

Edit 11:52 AM 1/18/2007:
I set up the level in a new install of reality factory.
All Directories have default names.
I set up the demo as I was informed to do and refered to the instructions in the forum above for each step.
All the files are copied and pasted into the dir they belong in.
I opened it in the editor and the editor identified everything in it.
The level compiled just fine.
When I ran the level it just failed.
There are no errors in the FR log file or the in editor log.
Could someone try this demo and see if they can get it to run in the latest version of FR?
Edit 8:29 AM 1/22/2007:
I recreated the landmine senario. I used the scripts and INI files that came with it. I use all new entities from the latest version of RF. I got the same results as before. Then I made new level and set down a small piece of geometry and made it a model. I then used a trigger and attached it to the model. Then I set up an explosion to be set off by the trigger. When the player hit the model it activated the trigger and that set of the explosion. It just seemed a simpler aproach then previous method. If you make your model/geometry is small and the same color as the ground seems ideal. If anyone needs lanmines and reads this and, Im sure that you will be pleased with the results.

It is simpler, I have those in both Asylum demos. The player-drops land mines and triggers them by keypress method workedWhen the player hit the model it activated the trigger and that set of the explosion. It just seemed a simpler aproach then previous method
at one time, then I remember it didn't work, such is the way of Reality Factory. I don't use
RF any more, I do Dungeon Hack now, so you're basically on your own.
