The lower the better. :)

I would say 1410 is a bit high for a character. You can't have many of them on the screen at a time...

the fine line for performance and still have your game look good seems to be between 600 and 700 polys per model. You can do more if your willing to make sacrafices and trade-offs, such as less dense textures and having fewer pawns on the screen at a time and so on.
Patience and tolerance are the keys to the passage of knowledge. Even those that are the most knowledgeable started with many questions.

Yeah, 600-700 polys is good.
Personally, I always try to use the polygons as a rough shape for the model and bake all the details into the textures.

For me the highest poly count i use is like 800 polys, but with the inventory system i am planning there will be much more because all the attached actors (that are attached to the player) have also to be taken into account. Like helmets, shoes, mails, weapons...I think with everything equipped, the poly count will double or so to 1600.

Real art is to make a bad thing look good, e. g. you can have a model look good with throwing thousands of polys in there (which is what most poeple do for the files you can download on the web, like a 6000poly picatchu for example) OR you can focus on the actural model (and also on the right textures!) and make it look good with only 600-1000 polys instead of 2000-3000.
Everyone can see the difficult, but only the wise can see the simple.

I would say hardware dependant,

My "hero characters" (player controlled/ most screen time) characters range from 2k-3k poly's

general NPC's - usually 500 - 1000 poly's

props (crates/computers/ tables - 0 - 300 (if possible)

you can have fairly detailed models as long as you use LOD's/ clip planes / fog and good use of level design,
however don't try and have 10 - 3k hero models on screen at one time in close proximity as they will eat the frames.

It's all about planning.
