Can anyone point me to a good tutorial on how to make decent texture using GIMP or DeepPaint...or any of those free programs.

there is a book called 3d game art f/x and design wich might be at your local library or you could buy it.
Once I was sad, and I stopped being sad and was awesome instead.
True story.
