Best editor?

Post by Sph!nx »

I know there are several different programs to use with RF like RFEditPro. I can't get the hang of RFEditPro. What more programs are there? I'm used to Valve Hammer Editor and Milkshape to make brushworks and models. I seek a similair program for Reality Factory.

You can use Valve Hammer Editor (aka. Worldcraft). Make your level -> export to .MAP -> import in RFEditPro -> add textures and entities.

Yeah, thats how I currently do it, but I was wondering if I could skip the Hammer part and build the maps in an editor that fully functions with RF. Eliminating the middle man, so to say. RFEditPro feels so limited to make complex architecture and landscaping.

Isn't it illegal to use maps you made in Hammer? (for commercial uses, at least...)

From a certain version on it has been illegal to use it to create maps for other games than Half-Life. Before that, however, it was legal to use it in any way, I believe. I'm not sure which version is legal and which is not. I have version 3.3 and there's no restrictions in its license (though I'm not sure if the license is for version 3.3... the files on my PC are one big mess).

***EDIT***
Found Andy's explanation here:
AndyCR wrote:There is no part of the license that says so - it has to explicitely say you cannot if it is prohibited. 3.3 doesn't say you can't, 3.4 does. You own the copyright to the work you do in the program, and the only reason you cannot legally in 3.4 is because it says that you cannot use it to create maps for non-Valve games. If you disobey that part of the license, the license becomes void, and thus it reverts to normal copyright law, in which (insane as it may be) you didn't have the right to download or use it. Thus the license is what grants you the right to use the software, and if you violate it, you lose that right. No such clause exists in the 3.3 license, so you don't lose your rights to use it by doing so.

Excellent, so I should be using the old hammer version which was called worldcraft? No problem. So I take it, I have to use an 'outside' editor for architecture and landscapes.
