Why do people hate RF?

Post by Destron »

Is it just me, or do a lot of 'purists' hate Reality Factory?

http://www.realityfactory.info/forum/vi ... php?t=2799 <--- I think I started this argument, sorry. :/

http://www.genesis3d.com/forum/viewtopi ... forum=9&39 <-- I guess this one's kind of old

anyway, I was just wondering... why do they hate us? it seems that everybody thinks we're sort of the vagrants of the video game production world. We don't really do any work (i.e. we don't really do any programming and use content that others have created etc) and put out crappy games.
I guess I don't know where I'm going with this. What do you guys think?

EDIT: I've also noticed that they attack our age. This is not only a flaw in reasoning, but it seems that they are almost pushing away a piece of the next generation of VG developers. Just because we're 'wannabes' doesn't mean we're 'neverwills'.

who says were wannabies!
I wanna put a concept of a game into playable format, and i'm doing so.
and if its innapropriate for a 18 year old college student to be working on such a project, then i guess im just going to have to stand the the hell out!
I have also noticed that many people think that htey are going to get rich by developing the next big thing by themselves!
thats crap, it dosent happen. you need teams. these fourms are some of the best and most pofessional people (as professional as gaming can get i guess) i've ever worked with.
I've worked several hard labor jobs in the past and none of the people I've actually had to work with were as good natured and dedicated as i've found here.
its ridiculous.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I was mostly referring to a few of us *cough* who I think are wannabes. I'm one of them. But that's not going to stop me.

From that 1st post that is pickles, I've worked with him on previous projects, He doesn't hate anyone(without a good reason) he's blunt and to the point,
And sometimes we all need to get out of comfort bubble, - thing is he was a real big contributor to RF eons ago. and implemented some of the cooler script commands we use today.

to be fair he does have a bit of a short fuse though, :D (no offense pickles if your watching)

realistically we have no flagship game for RF, this is why no one take us seriously, and to be blatantly honest, unless you dig past the visuals most people will say it is rubbish,

-most need to see the proof of pudding, so to speak, whether most of the nay sayers have any artistic talent or not, they want to make the next best game, an do no work. they see an engine of amazing visuals, and THIS is an engine!
but can't texture, animate, model or map, script to save themselves.

Problem is most will look at an engine by face value, and realistally these are the same people who say "I'm making the next big MMO and it will have the best graphics and physics in the world, it will be like final fantasy meets halo!"

....now how many of those people will actually make a game or finish something like that.

- Federico is really starting to get something together that could resemble a flagship game, from all the hard work i've seen him do, it is amazing and the visuals that he has produced are the calibur we need to bolster RF to show while

A). it is not the best engine graphically it still does an alright job, and
B). it is actually VERY versatile at what it does.

there have been a few games to note in Genesis and RF's history.

-Dragons lair 3d (modified Genesis code)
Image

Neocron (heavily modded genesis 3d)
Image
this guy actually did make an MMO out of genesis looks pretty damn cool!

-Striptease (adult theme stripper game)
(i aint putting a picture up you'll have to search for that yourself) :P

If you let them get you down you'll be plauged by trying to make RF do something it can't and that is be a modern engine. RF does halflife style games
nearly HL2, with a bit more tweaking but it is getting there,

When i jumped on board all them years ago, the newest feature added was liquid but the smimming entity had sever glitches now look where we are.
so stay faithful and your ideas will be realised eventually. or you'll modify them to suit.

First post was Pickles. He doesn't like any negative crticism of his work. In defense, he tends to trash the RF community. Second one was from some guy who was smoking some dope at the time of that post. :) That one came out of left field. When Jet3D v3.0 is completed, the offer to use it for RF will be extended again. This time accompanied with screens to make a compelling argument.

*sigh* - Whitelyon was in some kind of drugged or drunken stupor when he posted that thread, and he started a terrible conflict as a consequence. Pickles is a subject I will not approach again.

Suffice it to say that we should all take this kind of stuff with a grain of salt. What you like is important to you, and it should not matter what anyone else thinks of it. We can spend our whole life defending our choices if we wish, or we can get on with it.

If anyone else wishes to post here, you can, but keep it level. Otherwise, this may be a subject best dropped.

I will not make any comment directly related to topic of origin in this thread but I will give a few words of wisdom in general about things like this...

There are always people in this world who will try to drag you down. There is no escaping that. I have encountered it with my own game project but continue on because I don't care what others are saying, I will always strive for my goals. You should never let "downers" skew your vision and drive for your goals and dreams. It may be very hard to overcome the "punishments" of working for what you feel is important, but at the end of it all, that is what is truly important. What is important is what you want to do. I don't know why people feel the need to put down others for their own goals and dreams, but sadly it is a part of life. The hardest part of this fact is being able to overcome the fear or idea that "they" are right. Never let anyone discourage you and keep at it. You are the most important person to listen to, not those who discourage you.

*Definition of "punishments" (of working for what you feel important while having a presence of a "downer"):
The punishments that I am referring to included any number of the following:
-Alienation
-Feelings of failure
-Feelings of wasted time/life
-Self doubt
-Low self esteem
-Verbal harassment
-Physical harassment
-and other related feelings or events that are not named here...
Think outside the box.
To go on an adventure, one must discard the comforts and safety of the known and trusted.
