Images not allowed for signatures?

Hmm, I can't seem to use images in my signature... keeps coming up with a "Couldn't find demensions of image" error.
Is this by design? I've tried several formats in different sizes - gif, jpg, etc.

I wouldn't think that would make a difference, but it's 300x50.

I've just tried png and gif and both worked fine. Maximum image size in signatures is 480 x 80.
