Try booting into XP in safe mode by pressing f10(or f11? or is it f12?) just after your bios screen. You will get a screen that asks which mode you will want to boot Windows into,
safe mode
safe mode with networking
normal
Go for plain safe mode and run antivirus and anti-malware programs. If that doesn't help, you might have to repair Windows. Which how to do that will vary be if you can get into Windows or not.

Re: yay more computer probs
If you have a windows cd, there's something like an error console (I don't remember how it's called, I'm just guessing) and there's command that rewrites boot file. Try that.
P.S.: Don't worry. Microsoft will detect that you have a laptop and it'll stop working too

Maybe the CD is scratched causing corrupt files to be written or forgotten during installation? That sure is strange, I thought reinstalling Windows would have fixed the problem.

Do a full reformat and reinstall. That should clear it up. If not then it's time for a new hard drive by the look of things. Have you another HD you can try first?

Strange coincidence. My laptop just died today as well, though it's the video card on mine.

Re: yay more computer probs
I freaked out earlier today as Vista logged me in and I had no task bar, no sidebar and no icons. Ctrl-alt-del worked and I was able to start command prompt. I got that far and forgot to run explorer.exe. Funny thing is my current desktop is a solid shade of blue. I must have confused the OS, and made it think nothing was to load but the "blue screen" and an error message . Microsoft certainly has some strange issues with some of their software.
EDIT: I forgot to mention a reboot fixed the problem.

Re: yay more computer probs
FAT32 is not the best for your harddrive (can crash at random and then th whole partition is unusable, this can really happen!!!). NTFS is far more secure (does not crash, has never crahsed for me). So if you can, make a full format under dos (or with the repair console with the Windows CD, which is just like dos) with NTFS. Formatting with NTFS can work when formatting with FAT32 does not, i know this from own experience.
Everyone can see the difficult, but only the wise can see the simple.
