What engine can do this?

Post by Matte »

I am currently searching for an engine that...
  • ... is free
    ... can render big landscapes
... that is easy to use and requires almost no programming knowledge
    ... is 3D
Or should I just wait for RF2? It's a pretty cool concept so it would be cool if I could start now but maybe I can start modeling and mapping if I know the formats for RF2 and stuff. So what are the map and model formats?

My advice is just to wait for RF2. OGRE3D is very powerful and I don't think any other free, no-programming gamemaker uses it.

Except for NeoAxis that is.

Bernie would be correct. Here is a quote from the download page of their site:
Non-Commercial License
Non-Commercial SDK
Get access to the engine, without the purchase of the commercial license
Develop an unlimited amount of non-commercial projects
Projects can be distributed as freeware
Must display the engine logo upon startup of the product

Yes but... it much more difficult to make a game with NeoAxis than with RF and NA needs a half decent PC and Graphics card to work at all. It won't work on my 2 year old Dell pc 3 ghz pentium 1gb RAM with on board graphics card whereas I use this pc for RF all the time. It does work extremely well on my Dell XPS though (3ghz dual core pentium 2gb RAM and NVidia 6600 dual graphics card). NA also requires a decent amount of C++ knowledge also, so all in all I personally would prefer to wait for RF2 than change course at the moment.

Actually, NA uses C# not C++. RF2 will need the same requirements as NeoAxis as it uses the same engine (Ogre). Even when RF1 is updated to DirectX9, your old PC will no longer be useful (unless fallbacks to DX7 are in place). It's your video card that is the problem. It doesn't support shaders. Upgrade your video card and all your problems will be solved.

Yes I did know that, it's my bad posting.
Upgrading the video card won't make it any easier to make a game in NA though. The whole process seems to be very complicated. RF has a good editor which is easy to understand and I think AndyCR will make an editor for RF2 on similar lines. The NA editor is complicated and messy (at least I find it so).

You're right.
It's just that when I use a program I like full rights to use it for whatever I want... in this case if I wanted to sell anything I made with NeoAxis I'd have to pay an extra $499.

That is incorrect.

From the NA website:

Indie License
Indie SDK
License to develop one commercial project
The income of the project should be less than $200,000. If the income of the project will exceed $200,000 it is necessary to pay in addition $5,000.
Free upgrade to NeoAxis Engine 1.0
Upgradeable to Commercial License (for cost of difference)
Must display the engine logo upon startup of the product

Cost: $99

Actually, NA uses C# not C++.
Taken from the NeoAxis site:
Utilizes the power and convenience of C# and the .Net platform and is compatible with any .Net supported programming language.
Which means you can use managed C++ if you like.

License to develop one commercial project
Sorry, but that totally blows the deal for me.
I'm kinda picky.
