i was interested in starting warhammer40k and was wondering if any one could give me advice

Buy a big table.

Its the best thing to have first.

I use operation warboard (WW 2 battles in miniature) The bigger the table the bigger the battle.

i have a table that can be 3x3 or 6x6. also i am buying the starter set which comes with senery and going to paint and glue that onto two 3x3 peices of plywood.

I've been trying to start playing chaos, specifically the cult of slaanesh. Which race did you want to sport?

My best advice is to start small with two squads and a HQ or start with the Battle for Macrage (sp?) set to learn the basics. Try playing the race you want with proxies so you don't for example spend money on Tau only to find out that you want a shooter that is decent at close combat.

Yes its a starter set. I only recommended it if you didn't know how to play yet. The Tau look really cool (I like all the races except the Orks). I hope you enjoy your battle suits.

hmm... You're Tau too? I seriously thought you liked Space Marines better.
Anyway, a 3x3 makes a good scene for sitting on a desk or a shelf. 6x6 gives a mediocre battle, the one that GW supplies at the store for battle is a 18x6. With mountains, craters, bunkers, trenches, etc. I would suggest getting some terrain paper though. You set it on top of your terrain and take a blow dryer to it, it'll stretch and form to the shape of your terrain. Then let it cool, lift it up, put some glue down, and set it back on top.

Next I'd suggest some textured paint (sand and earthy spray paints or model paints work well) Next, Search Ebay or a similar site for the Tau Codex, and WH40K rule book. Both are essential to playing.

Next, get the WH40K paints you need. And choose your color scheme. Mine is a modified Sa'cea color scheme.
Troops cloth is painted A dark blue. Armor, a lighter gray-blue, and highlights orange.

Also, decide if you'll have modded or special troops. I spent a few hours at GW with an employee creating fair playing rules for my modded commander and his honor squad.
Special character: O'Xethara (Commander Deepthought) Piloted vehicle: XV10 Epiphany battle suit.
Special Rules: Take the basic rules of a XV8 Crisis. The suit is slimmed and the jet packs are removed. Lowering the armor and removing the ability to fly. In their place, two underslung railguns mount the battlesuit and a gyro stabilization system is added. The resulting battlesuit is lighter and more powerful, but with fewer shields and no flying ability.

Special Character: Honor Squad Modded Fire Warriors
Special Rules: Instead of two Crisis Battle suit bodyguards, O'Xethara has a squad of twelve specially chosen fire warriors. They are marked with a cape that is painted with the commander's symbol. They follow Fire Warrior rules when alone, or Bodyguard rules while accompanying the commander.

thanks for all the help. i am posting this on thu and plan tho go to good old GW for all the stuff.
i will be getting the starter set and some tau and possibly a moddified commander. (no big batlle board yet)

lol, the simplest asnwer is to get the PC games i have 3 and planing to get the 4th soon

yeah, they're pretty good and follow most of the rules of the game, plus they have their own to make it harder

Standard table size is 6' x 4' with about 25% terrain coverage.

I play Tyranids, Dark Eldar, Orks, Imperial Guard, Chaos, and Daemonhunters. In total around 4000pts worth of Tyranids, 5000pts worth of dark eldar, 2500pts of Orks, 3000pts of Imperial Guard, and I don't even want to know how much Chaos I have. lol

Fun game can get addicting, and not cheap.

I avoid forgeworld like the plague having dealt with their models doing commission work they require a lot of how to say it...correction with files, and greenstuff.

On top of that they charge and arm and a leg for everything.

yeah forgeworld is super expansive but the stuff is some of the best stuff in the game
