With and without shadows.I suppose the shadows in the pic are out of the question.
I said its simple,but its tricky.
Since you cant have these soft shadows,you could do some tricks on the path with the mushrooms:
Have a dark color master light to brighten the ground a bit,and add some smaller and brighter lights close to the ground on the parts the path is supposed to be bright.
If the player and other actors look dark,you can raise their fillcolor a bit.
If you dont get the desired result soon,you can use a flat bsp ground and walldecals for shadows,where you can adjust the alpha easily.

I though that stitic meshes don't support shadows
