Microsoft has released Windows 7 Beta. It looks cool and there are some revolutionary changes in the UI. You can even download the beta version. Get it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Windows 7 looks like it will actually be something worth while. If it turns out as good as they are advertising right now, I may even consider upgrading my Vista machines.

Windows 7 will run on hardware that can run Windows Vista. So there is no need to upgrade.

From what I understand Windows 7 is nothing but Vista with code removed. I read online that it is Vista with a few new features but many unnecessary services stripped from it to enable better performance. Windows XP after a clean install has 14 processes running by default, Vista has 40. I hope W7 will be the fix for Vista that will make it much more stable and enjoyable. I'm not a fan of any particular OS, and am still waiting for an operating system to be released that I like .

This was being developed in parallel to Vista. Vista was a release of Windows 7 before it was finished. MS needed to get a new OS out and fund Windows 7 development. So I guess Windows 7 is the fix...

BTW...SP1 for Vista fixed about 80% of the slowness issues. I own a Mac G5 and Apple released about 52 patches this year for Leopard. RedHat released about 23 significant updates for Linux as did Ubuntu and Sun Solaris. I don't see them being any different from MS. RedHat actually makes you subscribe to RedHat network (monthly charge) to get these updates.

It is practice to release an OS with minor bugs and fix them as you go along. It is impossible for a QA department to find every single bug. I do admit that some of the bugs in Vista were impossible not to find and that is a mistake by MS, but Windows 7 will rectify it. Trust me...I've been working with early versions of Windows 7 for a few months now (i'm an MSCE and an MSDN subscriber...I.T. was my field before music) and it is far far better than Vista.

It's more like XP with a facelift and with the Vista Aeroglass interface actually working well. XP had 27 processes by default once you applied SP2. You have to count service packs as they are patches to the main OS. Windows 7 has 23 processes with the default installation and no verifying every file while copying.

i hate microsoft, i wont be upgrading to windows 7, i'm gonna get a mac.

I also hate microsoft (there are a no. of reasons to do so). But most programs I use run on a Windows so I just have to stick to it. I would consider using Linux as its replacement rather than a Mac.

Well you guys be sure to say goodbye when you switch because you won't have a need for these forums since OSX and Linux doesn't run RF or most games.

I still use Windows XP and would recommend Linux if somebody is willing to switch.

Linux is good, nice and stable. However its graphics could be improved. GNOME and KDE need a professional touchup to compete with Vista Aero. Other than that I just want Linux to run most MS programs. If RF, Adobe CS suites and trueSpace worked on Linux, I would be all Linux. Unfortunantly none of those work even with Wine, so I am all Windows . Sooner or later though Linux will rise and overcome Windows.

I did notice though that Ubuntu 8.10 is just as resource hungry as Vista Home Basic, its boot time and desktop load time was about the same on my laptop with a core 2 Duo 2.13GHz processor and 2GB 667MHz ram with intel i943GML graphics. Programs were a little more responsive but overall, it was about the same. Of course I strip Vista of all sorts of extra processes so by default Linux is still faster, but a tuned Vista can perform just as snappy.
