Hate to say it but hes right.. Genesis is pretty outdated, and DX7 is pretty old, at least when it comes to technology.. Don't get me wrong, I really like RF and how easy it is, but when compared to most other game creation suits out there it seems under par.. And if i'm not mistaken, I will be using RF in Pacific Game Design as well as BV.. I don't know how thats going to work out, but I would like to know that I'm spending my money on a good education using up-to-date tools and engines.. But I really don't have much say w/ that since I haven't got a clue what all they will be teaching me and what w/... But I have faith.Unfortunately this didn't work out very well. The engine they have used is Genesis3D, which is very outdated today. They should have used Irrlicht. Also what you can do with the system is very limited. Genesis does not work anymore on many modern DX9 system, so it can't be used for commercial games. But still its a good point for beginners to do a simple shooter.

Of course genesis3d is outdated TODAY, but it was not when the RF project STARTED, in fact it was one of the best open source engines out there at that time... however all projects that were started to update genesis3d just failed...Unfortunately this didn't work out very well. The engine they have used is Genesis3D, which is very outdated today. They should have used Irrlicht.
Irrlicht didn't even exist back then... people should look at the facts before spreading such nonsense
I think various demos - ranging from 1st person shooters to racing games - have prooved that RF is pretty versatileAlso what you can do with the system is very limited.
That's simply untrue. There was a problem with the genesis3d engine on newer machines but this has been resolved months ago!Genesis does not work anymore on many modern DX9 system, so it can't be used for commercial games.
just to put things in its true light...
i don't believe this
what is with this community as of late?
from what i recall, it says 'author: gekido design group' because that is my username on that site and that's how you submit info to that site.
we do not offer reality factory for sale any more - how many times do i have to say that?
the RF license allows ANYONE to sell RF for any price.
at the time when we sold RF, we sold printed manuals, cd distributions and other add-ons that more than added up to the $150 sales price.
we also created custom executables, bundled extra tools, had a number of extra bundling agreements with various parties to enhance the default RF installation beyond what the free version was at the time.
This is the same as with commercial linux distributions - red hat didn't write every single line of code and yet they can still charge thousands of dollars for their enterprise version.
there are hundreds of commercial distributions of linux, which is the WHOLE POINT OF OPEN SOURCE.
this animosity just doesn't make sense.
It's open source for a reason people - it's DO WITH IT WHAT YOU WILL.
We chose to try and actually improve the community, invested thousands of dollars to market and promote the engine & community.
Apparently this was a complete waste of time and money, since this is the way that we get paid back for our efforts.
Our GDC booth alone last year (which we used entirely to promote & demo RF games & the toolset btw) cost us almost $15000 dollars.
It really pisses me off when people try to claim that we have done nothing to help this community.
Frankly if this is the way the community feels, then we will be done with it and you'll never hear another word about RF from us.
Just when I was in the process of reuploading the hundreds of files, resources, demo's and scripts that I've collected over the years to a new site mirror - frankly I'm not sure if i'll bother wasting my time doing this, since the community is so hostile to us these days.
Why should I go out of my way in my (very limited) spare time trying to help this community when this is how we get treated in return?
At PGD we do use RF as one of the engines we teach in our introductory level design course, not because it's the most advanced engine in the world, but because it is an excellent introduction to level design. The art creation and production process is almost identical to that used in Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and numerous other large commercial engines.
Sure the runtime might not be up to snuff, but the school is focused more on teaching the fundamental skills and production processes involved in making games more than teaching one specific engine or toolset.
We could spend years teaching one specific engine but i can pretty much guarantee that when you go out to find a job, you will NOT be using that engine - but if you understand the processes behind creating games, then you should be able to pick up ANY engine - no matter which one the company you go to work for uses.

Re: i don't believe this
Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I figured the program wasn't going to teach one specific engine and tool set, but I wasn't sure. I may have jumped the gun to say it was under par.. I haven't really gotten to explore all of it's features yet. I just can't get 50% of the projects using the Genesis Engine to run on XP w/ DX9c for some reason. Figured it was a DX compatibility issue.gekido wrote:At PGD we do use RF as one of the engines we teach in our introductory level design course, not because it's the most advanced engine in the world, but because it is an excellent introduction to level design. This is probably my problem as well. Where was the fix for this posted? That's simply untrue. There was a problem with the genesis3d engine on newer machines but this has been resolved months ago!
gekido, please dont get mad at the entire community, not all of us have the same opinion, you know that part of the community are gratefull for your work with RF, and we know that you put a lot of xtras in, you also were there when help was needed, I like RF, just a few bugs that were anoying but still a good package, and I hope your still going to let the People that are registerd and purchased RF, use your new engine and design package, I would like to use it, and i still want to use RF as it is still moving fwd...

i agree with the above......now, i have an excuse to be pissed off....but i'm not.i realise he has done what he has done for the betterment of his( yes..."his", not "our") company.
Delete this post if you want to, cause i'm gonna rant. You retards. There are those of us out there who are not the best at making models, textures, etc.and you have now killed off one of our sources. Thank you idiots very much.and, oh yeah, hike1, your tutorials make no sense.............and I will not be back....thanks for nothing.

Bah! Yeah that devmaster listing has been there since long long ago with those same negative posts.
If I had posted the Devmaster listing and it said Author: Zen_Budha would you be attacking me now?
Or what if I sold content packs for RF? Would I not them be profitting off of RF?
It's not like Gekido was selling just a copy of RF on CD for $150.
Whatever is going on between Pickles and Gekido is between them.
I think the rest of us need to move on. This forum doesn't need all of this negative mess. It's bad for the forums. Scares lurkers away, and results in disputes causing long time posters, and users to go elsewhere.

RIGHT!
Im getting F***in' tired of this!!!!
First off no more bickering! were pulling ourselves to pieces here, nothing good can come of arguing and fighting,
i've been round here for a while, and i haven't seen the community in such a huff, since that political thread, and that was aimed at others this conflict is aimed within.

now i can't remember when gekido canned RFpro, but this post was made nearly a whole year ago. this is a bit unfair.
The whole reason for the hostile nature is from that post the pickles made, i think pickles was right to make the post as it outlined some concerns about the Axing of the comunity, gekido's descision, so be it.
We have a community, a place to download the engine/ share ideas what's the point still ripping on gekido. it made some of us mad when we heard the news, sure .....lets drop it already it's old hat already!
However i think quest did the right thing and deleted the post as it was getting heavy handed, this is what happens when we go looking for trouble it finds us,
there's only one reason were still here and that cos we stick together in this community, if we rip each other apart where does that leave us if we carry on like this we all may as well give up on the engine, why is the engine still here support, support from you and I, if we dissapear (and i have seen whole communities vaporized, by one or two malicious posters,) so will RF!
GROW UP PEOPLE!
