Couple noob questions..need help

Post by hunter349 »

Hello, first off I would like to say that after I got the bug to make my own game I tried several engines and for me Reality Factory has been by far the most intuitive and least frustrating (there is still plenty but much less than other engines I have tried).

I have a question that are probably pretty basic but I could not find answers in the forum or in docs.

I have removed my other 2 questions as I have found the answers through forum searches. (it took awhile to track em down but they were there :)

The biggest question is how do I display a model I downloaded inside the level? I have the model in .act form but I don't know where to go from there. It is a building not a person so I tried using static entity and typing the name of the act file in the zactorfile line but nothing comes up.

Here is a badly drawn picture of my level idea.

Firstly welcome to the forums. Secondly have you downloaded the E-book found http://www.realityfactory.info/cms/inde ... umentation it is a very usefull E-bok that will help you start with RF.Is the act file in the Act folder, also have you typed in the name for the act file exact as a little error can stop the file loading

Thank you for your reply. I will read the e-book and see what I can find.

Right now I am still stuck on putting a downloaded model in the game. I thought maybe I was using a model that had too many ploygons so I downloaded a very low polygon house model (basically a square with a pyramid roof and a opening for a door) but that did not work.

My models are all .act and can be viewed easily in the act viewer. They are also all in the Actor file under media with the rest of the .act files.

I have read the docs and a few tutorials. SO far I have tried:

1. using a static mesh entity and typing the name of the .act file with and without the .act extension in szActorFile
nothing shows up with that

2. using a pawn entity and typing the name of the .act file with and without the .act extension in szActorFile
nothing shows up with that either. It also crashes if I fiddle around with the script line. ( I assume this is because the pawn entity is for NPC models with an actual script to dictate behavior where as a house just needs to sit there)

3. I have also tried using a static entity proxy and typing the name of the .act file with and without the .act extension in szActorFile
nothing happens when I do that either. I even tried typing in the robot act file name into the szActorFile line and that does not show up either even though it is a .act that came with Reality Factory. I read the E-book section on static entity proxy and it says I just need to put in the name of the act file which I have done exactly. I think there has to be another step i'm missing.

YES!!!!!!!!

I just figured it out and I am making this post to help anyone else who may have the same problem I was having.

When I installed Reality factory it installed as C:\RealityFactory then all the other folders are within the reality factory folder.

Well, when you put in a .act file to szActorFile it automatically looks for the directory C:\Media\Actors
so it did not know to look in the reality factory folder first. I have fixed it by just copying my media folder from within the reality factory folder and pasting it directly under C:\ I will be looking through the .ini files to see if I can change the directory call so I don't have to keep doing it in the future.

And thank you to the above poster for your post. I only realized this after very carefully examining the file path lines in the E-Book you posted.
