I have to check Platinum Arts Sandbox and maybe edit this message later.
I saw a side scroller among others
Platinum Arts Sandbox Free 3D Game Maker Sidescroller Preview
I do not know yet how difficult it was to make and if it required any programming.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7Vf8ShHv2k

for example they say this has some basic sidescroller jump n run features

@Veleran
That is a demo that comes with the engine. You can play it yourself after installing the engine. Also, here is a SSP tutorial:

@megatop
Why is it only for kids? A lot of the videos are of FPS and RPG games.

I don't think there's any sort of 'package' for free like RF that will let you create your own content, AND still keep the rights and sell the product.

I never got why users think Reality Factory looks bad graphic wise though. Most of the content on the screen, YOU the creator are responsible for. Sure, it doesn't have fancy shaders like UDK, and its BSP based which to alot of people is dated, but that doesn't mean it can't look good. It depends on the artist for the most part. DarkPlaces for example is based on the first Quake-engine, which also uses BSP, but it looks great!

Plus the whole engine is open source, so if you don't like something in the engine, just put in your own stuff.

I could not check Sandbox game maker earlier because i did not have internet connection.
Now the download from their site is slow to me and does nt seem to ever finish.
So,i will just check the video for the moment and try to figure out if it is easy enought for me to use and modify.

I too prefer the open source and be free to publish.
Maratis 3d is open source Gnu licence and you can publish commercial games.

Their support was more for blender,and the 3ds max 2011 exporter might not be finished yet,i have to check again.
I am not sure how much i would have to settup the actor shader form scratch..needs to be checked also.

Reality factory game levels are not that easy to make look good as the polycount and shadows are restricted mostly because there is no 3d graphic card hardware acceleration.

For now i am checking sandbox game maker and maratis.

I have not installed sandbox game maker yet,so i look around to tother engines little more.
Dx studio pro is now free to purchase ,after an email notification ,and download link and licence .

http://www.dxstudio.com/features.aspx

Generally i do not look much on engines that have high prices or a free a feature-crippled version.
Maybe dx studio is old and lacks basic built in entities,i do not know.

Something else-Maratis 3d forum seems to have not many posts .I have asked about the 3ds max exporter will be finished or for beta link but i have not get respond yet.Maybe they all still use blender,it looks like Max users will have to wait longer .
If no easy engine comes along i can start watching udk video tutorials again.

We've been looking into Leadwerks engine. Did you guys have a look at that? If so, what do you think of it?

I've seen reviews of it, but they are very mixed, hence why I'm curious.

That actually looks like a fun game mechanic. They should release it on consoles too, because consoles can always use more editors.

We're now going to use CryEngine 3 for our game, since they released it for free (for non commercial games).
Leadwerks is also pretty nice, but you have to pay 200 dollars per license, which is a little too much when you're working with a team.
