Big levels? Open skys?

Post by fps »

I am trying to design a level that is basicly a large open field area that leads to other ares by loading new levels. (like the main field area in the zelda). what I can't figure out is how to give my area the appearance on not being sealed (open sky). but in reality the area would have to be sealed to work. I can fake the walls of the world by adding mountains but I want to eventually add things like helicoptors that will need room to manuver in the air. I don't understand how exactly to do this. can anybody help me?

Thanks,
Fps

Build a bigger world box? I think that is the only way to do it to have the giant air space.
Think outside the box.

that will can cause your frames per second to go down, the way to avoid this is by giving a fog in the distance where it doesnt load anything thats a certain distance away, and if its fast pace action helicopters do what gta did, they used the LOD system, this loads small texture files and very low poly models for distant items and then when it gets closer it gets more detaild, there is three different levels of this function with in RF i belive, i dont know how to use it but im sure other people will be able to tell you or just search the forums, i know its here somewhere.

i hope that helps and good luck with your game

What you would need to do is find some realistic textures to use for the box's front, sides, top, bottom, and back(i'm not sure if you have to set all those). http://dhost.info/realityfactory/onlinehelp/SkyDome.htm Here is the skydome in the online help.

In the rfeditpro there is a button in the left bottom corner that is for setting up the skybox. I think you may be able to use it too but i would have to check before I would know for sure.

Focused, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it. If you aren't sure which way to do something, do it both ways and see which works better. - John Carmack

do a google search for skies and level beuilding in unreal and quake. the same methods they used can be used to make better skies in RF.
