Game Programming

Post by CowboyUp »

I want to get into game programming, maybe make a career out of it in the future. But, I don't know where to start.

What programs/tutorials/lessons/engines can anyone reccomend?

How old are you? if less then 18 it's too early to think about this, if you're grown up then you can contact some private teachers from famous(not neccesery) companies (Blizzard, ArenaNet, NcSoft, EA games) and maybe they could teach you something( best way to learn I think). Of course you can try creating something with RF. If you'll get bored in first minute - this job is not for you.

Not true actually. There have been gifted programmers hired at the age of 16 by big companies.

if your goal is to get a job in game programming, i strongly suggest that you start learning now. game programming is no simple task and is probably one of the most difficult jobs in the world.

There are a lot of tutorials on gamedev.net, but they're not for begginers. search google for tutorials and start learning DevC++, Visual Basic C++, and C# (.net framework).

Yep - I was hired at 14. There were laws regarding how much I could work in a week, but other than that there weren't any problems.

Yeah also there are now univarsitys that provide coarses in game programing so if you are still in school, you should start learning as much as you can now and one day see if you can get a degree in game development! Thats my plan, Im starting out here with RF but definitely plan to go commercial one day and get a job as a game dev somewhere check out http://www.igda.org, (international game developers association) its a non-profit organisation that help people find work in ANY area in game dev, (proggraming art audio game desighn etc...) there is a list of varsitys that offer various game dev related coarses I bet theres one near you, They even have a varsity in Iran  !

Any way good luck its a tough industry to break into, but its growing fast and will soon settle into a more structured sect.
