If you are a student you can get a pretty good discount through online stores which require proof of enrolment at a school. I have found 3DS Max 2008 perpetual license for only around $400 dollars and one year license for around $200 I believe. Same with Adobe software, if your a student you can get good discounts. Look up the adobe education store on their site.

Re: Look... I have moar new models and questions.
new fourms can be a royal pain in the @$$.you could use a 3ds max forum for that...
I usually get a lot of "oh, your new here. we'll just hassle you untill you leave and not help you with your problem at all"
Oh well, if its an expensive tool mabey the users will be a bit refined.
Thanks fps.
What do you think of my half of a gun.
Modeled it off of an air soft gun.
It needs more detail.
Still working.
hoping to show off some of my ability.

Nice looking model! Great work there!
I guess some forums can be like you described there, but I think the number of professionals, want to be professionals and indies using 3DS Max would know how to act(I hope ). Anyhow, yeah, 3DS Max is rather expensive. If you are a student I would suggest trying to obtain a copy with a student discount, there are even High School student discounts. Look into it. I know I can save $1100 on 3DS Max 2008 because I am a college student and I think the same price applies to any student who is eligible. On average, student discount price for 3DS Max 2008 online is around $380USD. Talking to any of your computer teachers about it might also help as they usually have good connections.
lol, you are a student right? In a previous post fps stated that you had to go to class? I think the only student not eligible for a student discount from student online retailers are those home schooled.

Re: Look... I have moar new models and questions.
I go to college with fps.
notice we have the same guy as our sig.
It is our unholy alliance.
I don't want to extrude this one because i want to model the back of the gun and stuff with a lot of detail.
I will look into these connections.
Thanks guys.
hey, do you think i should scrap my player model.
It doesn't look very good and it has like a 1200 poly count already.

Well, the player model is a good first attempt. I would say attempt it again, as each time you do, your skills will get better and subsequently your model will too.
Also, since you are in college I would suggest trying to talk to your campus bookstore to see if they could order 3DS Max in for you at the student discount. I did that today and tomorrow will find out if they can do it for me. I would rather go through my campus store than to have to send academic proof to any website. I don't trust much of the internet.

Re: Look... I have moar new models and questions.
I just found out that my university book store can order in 3DS Max 2008 for me at the student discount rate! I would definitely ask at your colleges book store to see if they can order it in for you madness. My university store can get it for about 10 dollars more than the lowest price I have found online, but I am willing to pay that over sending a copy of my Student ID to online retailers.

Re: Look... I have moar new models and questions.
Actually, I can get 3DS Max 2008 for $400. That is the perpetual license so I never have to relicense the software or worry about a forced upgrade. I have only seen the $200 3DS Max as a 14 month license making me buy another license or upgrade after that time is up. My university could order that one in for me, but to pay that much I might as well get the perpetual. I can also get Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium for $500 instead of $1600. I hope to purchase them very soon. I may order both today. It's a lot of money to spend, but I figure the more time I have experience with the industries software, the greater my chances are of getting hired for a job with 3+years of experience with the software when I graduate. I just don't like that huge upfront cost! If I wasn't a computer science major and if game making/computer art was only a hobby I would stay with open source, but I figure this will be better for me in the long run. I wish the industry tools wouldn't cost so much. It doesn't leave much room for indies like us or those who just want to play around with the tools as a hobby.
Oh, I almost forgot, it seems that Maya is becoming a larger part of the gaming industry. It has been creeping in for the past 5 years as the Autodesk website states. Under Nintendo's corporate site for jobs, one of the game design jobs had knowledge of Maya a plus! Here I thought Maya was only for the movies. I will still stick with Max though as its formats are still the standard for almost every game engine created from what I have seen. It is also still considered the standard 3D modeler as well.

Wow! Looking great! Very nice model you have there. Only thing that seems odd is that the tip of the barrel is orange which makes me think of airsoft/cap guns. Other than that it looks fantastic!
Ok, to answer your question earlier about if anybody here has 3DS Max and will be able to help you, I have ordered my copy of 3DS Max 2008 today. It should be in by mid next week. So I will be able to try and help with 3DS Max if you get it. I am very busy with college though so I probably wont be able to spend quality time with it until my classes let out the first week of May. I also ordered CS3 Web Premium that I mentioned in my last post as well.
