Dunno. But in a small country like Finland that's the only option. If they didn't force us, Finland wouldn't have an army at all.
For 6 months you have an army. Unless they all stay, how do you learn to work together properly? Actually, it'd be terrific if folks felt their country didn't need an army. . .but that day will never come.

Not exactly. The whole system is pretty different from the US' professional army. The six months I'll be spending there will actually be my military training. Then I'll move on to the 'reserve' (I'm not sure if that's the right word), meaning that I'll still be an army soldier but I'll be able to continue my life normally. And then if there's need for the army (a war, for example) I'll be ready when it comes to my training. Of course, I
seriously hope I will never have to put the skills I learn there in practise.

Indeed. Imagine all the money that could be spent on the welfare of the people if there was no army.

That is actually not true. Army doesn't start wars, politics do. And there's nothing wrong with an army that is only held for defense. I will certainly go to the army I my county needs me.

But if there's no army, the politicians would have nobody to fight for them

No just fight, but also defend. Remember that.

You only have to defend if someone wants to fight. So fight is always in the equation no matter how you spin it.
Anyway, I wish you the best of luck, Juutis. You're a fine young man, and should be proud to do your duty for your country. I apologize if it seems I've been disrespectful at all. I am just a tad tired of our war president trying to turn the rest of the world into an extension of the US, and will give up as many young Americans and natives as he has to in the process. The US is a good part of the reason other countries feel they need an army right now. What if our government decides your government is a danger. PNAC in action.
Indeed. Imagine all the money that could be spent on the welfare of the people if there was no army.
