RF2 Release Date & Backwards Compatibility Announced

Post by AndyCR »

I am announcing the release date of RF2 today. It is May 8th, 2010. In addition, I am announcing backwards compatibility with the vast majority of RF1 resources: actors, levels, textures, entities, bitmaps (jury is still however out on GIF files), sound files (except MP3 files), and INI files. This means that if you want to get a head start on an RF2-based game, your best bet is to create it in RF1 and import it when RF2 is released in 2010.

I believe that sounds totally fair to me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your willingness to dedicate the next 4 years of your life to something which will be such a boon to the community!!!

I, for one, am going to try and have The Dungeon be the first RF1 game to be imported into RF2 when it's ready!

Anyone up to the challenge!!!

I am up to the challenge! I will join you Steven8 with having my game be another one of the first RF2 games.

I am very happy you are going to make RF2 backwards compatible Andy. Now, I have 2 questions:

1) How has the jury decided on script backwards compatibility?

2) In your RF2 videos, you loaded the menus from ini’s correct? So if ini's will not be compatible now, how will we generate our menus, huds, etc? If you haven't finalized that yet or just feel like keeping it to yourself for now, that’s fine, I am just curious.

1. Scripts sadly will not be compatible, because they use a different language. I might throw in SimKin at the last minute but Python is certainly the primary scripting language. However, it wouldnt take long at all to rewrite your enemy scripts.

2. the ini files in the videos were the same ini files you use in RF1, in fact they were the Ini files from RF072 or RF075. In fact periodically I grab an RF1 demo or release, throw it's menu ini and menu bitmaps into the RF2 folder, and make sure it works to root out any bugs so it's 100% compatible with RF1's ini files.

Redoing some scripts is really a small price to pay for everything we'll be getting!!

Thank you Andy!! :D

Yes I believe thats very fair. For 2 programmers that is actually a very rapid development. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that it took Gekido Design group a couple of years to make Beyond Virtual. I'm also pretty sure that(please correct me if I'm wrong) they had 2 or 3 programmers.

Thanks for taking on this project. :D

@Steven8 I might take you up on your challenge!

Thank you very much for all your hard work and detication Andy. Rewriting scripts is indeed a small price to pay for what you are going to give the community.

Now that I reread your first post, it seems I overlooked the ini's. Sorry for the redundant question  I should have read more closely.

I'll take you up on that too Steven8. I've been playing around with Fatal Exception in my spare time, i re-wrote the story, revamped the visual style (even prettier) and got the gameplay down to a tee. Lets see which one of us can get our game ported first! ;)

2010 will be a good year. I'll be able to use RF2, and then I'll be old enough to drink so i can get rid of the headache RF2 will give me. :D

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! 2010 it is! Its also when my home country of South Africa is hosting the football world cup! aWsomO! I take your challenge ''The Red Button Story'' will be ready for RF2 although I dont plan on it launching in 2010 since I have a feeling ill take a year or so extra to work out the bugs that cum from porting and to revamp ALL the visuals to match the awsome irrilicts strenghth! Although my game as sum alredy know is not going to be abou the gfx I can still bumP up sum of the cool effects Im planning, and the EPICNESS of the levels!
