I posted on this about 2 months ago, you
need win xp with service pack 2, and the
Dev kit is also by Microsoft.

It's not the posting part, it's the fact that you have to use
Windows XP service pack 2 and a lot of other Microsoft stuff, kind of like having the U.S. government issue you a 'free' game engine.

I believe he means that everything Microsoft makes enforces you to install service pack 2 or it won't work. I never liked that i had to install service pack 2 (which can take hours when you still have to download it) in order to enjoy the free visual studio c++ express.

You can correct me if i am wrong hike1.

What's wrong with SP2?
I've had it since the release and I think it's OK... I haven't run into troubles with it.
Is there something special I need to know about it? :D

Only major things wrong with it is that it slows your PC down quite a bit compared to no service pack or SP1. If you have a decent PC, it's ok, and protects agianst viruses and crackers a bit better than SP1.

yea all i have noticed is now i have an anoying information box in the bottom right corner saying you have no virus scanner installed, doesnt it get the message after 3 months i dont want one it also screwd the settings up on my desktop until a few more updates came out, me being the only user i didnt want to log on, i just wanted to start it up and use it, but when sp2 came out it kept forcing me to log in to a user, for a while i kept it unisntalled till the new windows media player came out wich also forced you to update to sp2 at that time another update had sorted my problem out and works just the way i want it to now. so yea i actualy think its pointless

nope not until last night, and thats cos i wasnt sure about a file i had downloaded, i dont keep them due to it using up cpu resources, i have had viruses years ago but not recently, saying that i let m brother on my pc for a few days and he got one a few months ago grrrr.
i do belive that the latest version of internet explorer needs sp2

WOW. i cant believe how many people dont have SP2. wow im looking at getting SP3 and you guys are still stuck on 1.

i dont have any problems like the little icon in the taskbar or the login. when i press my on button it just logs on automatically.

i once had that icon thing on my old pc and it turned out it was a trojan installer. oh and why dont u guys use like mozzila firefox as ur browser.its just so much better than IE. u dont get as much spyware or viruses as nearly all hackers target IE becuase all the people who dont really now much about pcs use it. ive also got a program that allows you to get rid of any operations that start on your pc when you log on. so i can remove any of the little operations that sit on my taskbar.

Not to mention Firefox is way more customizable. Most of the time a little faster too...especially with the fasterfox plugin.

That's almost correct...

I only have XP on a backup machine, and then only
for 'experimental' stuff like multiverse.net and xna and because there's demand for people who can network it, I
run win 2000 on my actual work machine.

O I didnt even consider that people didnt use sp2. I really cant remember using my pc before sp2 so i cant tell if its better or worse.

If you do have sp2 i guess it would be something fun to learn though most of the good stuff is not there (lan support and such).

the firefox vs ie thing is silly in my case. i started using firefox hesitantly because i was used to ie but after a while i only use firefox and only use ie at school. i love the tab feature which i heard ie has now but im not going to go back.

wmp11 is anything special it just looks really good. everything is looking better and better with windows (i mean it looks shiny not that windows is great). i just cant stand how it all takes my cpu cycles though and evertime i try and look at something simple my vid card fan kicks in.
