I guess the only way currently is to use different LODs (Levels of Detail). The LOD basics are covered in the manual. You can can change the distance at which different actors are used with scripting commands.

The manual:
LOD distance 1 - after this distance render LOD actor 1
LOD distance 2 - after this distance render LOD actor 2
LOD distance 3 - after this distance render LOD actor 3
LOD distance 4 - after this distance render LOD bitmap
LOD distance 5 - after this distance do not render anything
It seems that 3 actors is the maximum.

Could you have the actor change when it dies for example, and have an animation forthe change?

well you could have a die animation that blends into a "form" animation used by the new actor you replace the corpse with, that way you could animate the actor change, Im not sure how but I think that using LOD's you can make dead corpses take on a new lower poly actor :?

@darkmaster did you want to have a button pressed midgame that transforms your actor to a different one?
