"Student transferred for making Counter-strike map based on school"

Sigh... So he plays CS and likes swords. So what?!

"Police also ordered the student to erase the game and maps from his computer."

And they have the right to do that how? Particularly erasing his hard work?

yeah just read that too,

well, this is just a sign of the times,

i remember making a duke nukem map of my school, not because i gradvisions of mass murder or any such thing it's because i knew my school and so did my mates so it was fun to play in multiplayer, because everyone knew it.

and i'm sure the guy who made this map had the same idea.

and im sure there are hundreds of other school based maps out there, the media has to understand that games are form of escape not murder simulations (Jack Thompson i'm looking at you here) games are just that, theyre games no different from movies or books, forms of entertainment not to be taken too seriously,

We just had a threat where I live, some guy made a post on myspace saying that some school with-in the state will see a shooting worse then Virginia Tech.
Pretty much every school was on lock down today :x really makes me sick, to think people would be so stupid.

@ jonas
well in my opinion that is a guy who is completely insane.
he is either being serious (wich i hope he is not) and i imagine if u wanted to do something like that you would not tell anyone cos it would make it pointless

or he is prankster(wich is most likely) and he will probably get caught.

about the main topic of the thread.
to be honest its not suprising, americans take things way to seriously, its a game, you arnt gona create the level over night, there for i do belive it was planed before the shooting. these sort of game are violent, who has ever played a fps without shooting or at least punching, it would make it a fp game, just creating a new environment to play the game in are constantly being made, so just because its a 'school' they make people delete it, if i made one of my house would that mean i was gona go kill my family?
while thinking about this and thinking about just how seriously things get taken over there i rememberd a british tv seires called top gear when they done a road trip in america, it was so funny, and yet proves how americans reaact to things, here in the uk, we wouldnt care about that sort of stuff, well not to the extent the amricans did, to show you what im on about i uploaded a vid to youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kllacpg_OfA

didnt know writing could hurt you, so why attack them?
edit*
same principle aplies to the game level, it hasnt hurt anyone so why go hard on the lad.

Wowo, thats really stupid. At least he's actually doing somthing constructive with his time. Could be doing drug deals, and such. The media needs to get a grip. Thats my take at least.

I also think that games are more an escape than a mass murder training. Heck, if they are shooting poeple in the school in virtual, it's way better than letting them shoot them in real life. I have seen the film 'Bowling for Columbine' by Micheal Moore, and there was a part in the film where he explained what reasons the politicians gave for the mass murdering in Columbine. Some weird thinghs were said by the politicians (don't remember them all), and then M. Moore focused on the accusement of Marylin Manson. They seemed to see him as a kind of punching bag for all of this. And most of all, his music. Well i don't exactly like his kind of music but he said something that really impressed me:

"A cd doesn't shout at you that you have the wrong clothes or the wrong school bag, it supports you in having your own style and own thinking"

So, it's kind of an escape. It's kind of paralell to games.

The problem with most of the poeple that murder other poeple is that they just don't see another escape/slove for their problem. If they had some, then they would go this way. It's the same with suicide, they see no other way.

Punishing this guy is just stupid. He was building a map of his school for CS, so what? Of course, building a map for counterstrike raises your aggresion levels by 50% and gets you free accesss to 3 different handfire weapons, so yeah....(sarcasm)
If he buid lots and lots of munition for different weapons, or had no friends at all, then i would get suspicious...

You see, here in germany, the gamers loose a 'war' against the politicians. They (the politicians) want to prohibit 'killer-games' like Counterstrike and such. You will not be able to buy them even if you are 18, if i understood it right. Noone can then buy them.... The thing is that they are black-white coloring computer games because CS is not about randomly headshooting enemies, it's also about the tactics that stand behind it.

Well i just hope we don't black-white color our views of people and think all americans are stupid just because some are...it's the same with everything...all germans are boring because some are...all japeneses take photos of everything because some do...all foreign poeple are criminals because some are. That's 'death humor' (even sharper then sarcasm) from me. And i don't want you to laugh about it...i really hate it when poeple start to black-white color everything because black-white views lead to black-white thinking and black white thinking leads to black-white doing.
And we thought we left the black white area since there is colour in the TV. (the last 2 paragraphs don't quite fit the topic but it had to be said)

I hope i did not offend anyone.

EDIT: Haha i must be the typical german, i have complained about something just because it had to be said

I agree it is very foolish for them to blame a game for causing kids to go shooting others. What really causes them to snap is their life style. If they have had a bad life, been treated horribly, picked on, ignored, looked at as an outcast, with no friends, nothing to look forward to in life, those are the ones that snap. Yes they might play a game as sort of a pain pill, to put the pain of reality aside, but after a while I think they just snap. Then on top of this there are a lot of messed up families, parents on drugs that leave their kids, parents that are alcoholics, divorces. Tons of other things besides a game to mess a kid up. If someone made me delete all my hard work, I would go berzerk, especially if I was already using the game to get away from reality, and it was gone, and suddenly I was forced back into reality.

people who do these shootings are seriously sick in the head, First off I love marilyn manson, also i love videogames (duh) and the more violent the better, but seriously im not a sick basterd going to shoot up his school!?!?

Games are fun, they are ment to be that way, they can be art, and yes they COULD be used as outlets forsickos, but the idea that a game could MAKE a kid shoot up his school is just stupid... Same goes for music, its just the insane paranoia that grips the west. :? Its all rahter dumb really...

yeah, seriously, on TV americans are generally quite close minded, but i have loads of frends who are american, and they are AMAZING, and like i have met many people on line (in games forums myspace) from america who are also really cool, but yeah its just how they are frequently portrayed in the media...

now jay i must say, ive always loved germans and I think they rock I never even knew there was a stereo type saying they were boring, but please show me ONE asian person, who when taking to england will take less than 3000 photos!
btw i can make asian jokes cause my best frend is taiwanese so NEH! :P

Like no one else has ever made a map of their local school in a video game! I haven't but I know of folks who have. I just hope that the zombie game made by teh_psyco and his friend from this forum doesn't get targeted next.

This right here is Jack's response to the shootings. Blaming games again are we!?

haha, thanks for that link i hadnt seen that yet... :D made me laf

and dont worry, even tho in our game u actualy DID go and kill all the zombie teachers, it was in southafrica, the land of the free :D Where if there WAS a school shooting, no one would really notice cause they were being hijacked or raped anyway :P

also, the police wouldnt have been able to do anything, cause well there wernt really any police who "INVESTIGATED" potential "terrorist" threats, so tiz all good... :?

that's absolutely rediculous though. 'level 3' certainly does not apply to the situation, because there was no direct or even indirect threat. he made a map of his school. he didn't make a game where he killed class mates. he made a map, for a game about fighting terrorists. how does this apply as a threat? the article doesn't even mention that he was actively playing the map. how is that any different than making an architectural drawing in autocad? it's freedom of expression... and the officers violated that by ordering him to delete it. which i sincerely hope that he refused to do without a court-order.

americans are way too paranoid. especially parents and teachers. people fear what they don't understand, and i will guarantee that the officers and the school board have never played a real video game in their lives... and Solitare or Tetris don't count. basically it boils down to bigotry and discrimination. if it doesn't match their values, then it is immediately wrong, regardless of the law and the rights of the individual.

and that, ladies and gentleman, is what people like that are trying to make of our so called 'freedom of speech': "Say whatever you want, as long as we agree with it."

well the way this conversation has gone i think that this is pretty related >> http://kotaku.com/gaming/feature/featur ... 252914.php

its just Jack Thompson doing what he does... its really a disgrace that so soon after the shooting, he spews these blatent lies to an understandably vunerable public... it is this man who is the sicko, hes obsessed and it shows. :?
