Importing .obj files

I am new in 3d modeling, so excuse me if I'm asking about something simple. I make objects using TrueSpace 3.2, then, I export them as .cob files, convert them with TrueGENE and use as .act files for StaticMesh. Everything works, but objects lose their colors and are white. How can I import colors too?

Hi Flanker,

Welcome to the forums. I don't believe objects that are 'colored' in Truespace will transfer the colors. If you apply textures which are 64 x 64, 128 x 128, 256 x 256, etc., then they will transfer over with your object.

Thanks. But I need to make complicated objects and it would be very, very inconvenient to color them using textures. Is there any way to import in Reality Factory colored objects without adding .bmp textures, may be using some other formats or programs?

Are they many colors, or one. If they are one, then one 32 x 32 texture applied to the whole object would do it. Or, if you were to use the actor studio, you can tell it to use the texture in extra textures. It will just automatically apply the texture to any surfaces which have no texture.

I don't think rf will accept color surfaces. I believe hay have to be textured. If anyone has knowledge to the contrary, please step in.

Thanks again, but I found a way to import multicolored objects from TrueSpace (or anything else) to RF. I saved an object in DirectX .x format, then opened it in MilkShape tools -> DirectX Mesh Tools, saved it and exported like .bdy, then I made an actor file using Actor Studio. I was able to see this colored object when I inserted it in a demo. So, fortunately, it's possible and not too complicated. Now I just need to learn how to make animation, joints and other thing for my game. I wish there was a more simple and useful tutorial for it.

be careful: MilkShape tools -> DirectX Mesh Tools blows away the skeleton.+

Skeletons and animation are pretty easy in Milkshape.

All you have to do is pose your model and create keyframes by using the tools in Milkshape and the program will create several frames between. I gree with bernie animating in milkshape is a breeze. I use it to create the models from start to finish mostly. Sometimes I use 3DCanvas to cut and slice things, but I always end up back in Milkshape to export to bdy file.
