I can reccomend "Break into the Game Industry How to get a job making video games" by Ernest Adams, and, though I haven't read it much, "Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX" by Jim Adams (I wonder if the authors are related?), though the latter is a bit outdated.

"Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX"
That's what Ralph used for our conversation scripting system,(along with unreal scripting)
I xeroxed it
off and sent him the original.
Animating realtime game characters in 3ds Max
Modeling realtime game characters in 3ds Max (actually
I don't recommend the modeling part, just the texturing part)
By Paul Steed, requires degree in 3ds Max though.
