hey all, i recently reformatted my hard drive, but for some reason sound doesnt work. internets doesnt work either, although before i installed my drivers it did. i installed the latest sound drivers from realtek, but on device manager it says drivers are enabled but not working properly. how can i fix this?

Would using the update drivers option help? If you go into device manager and look through the tabs it should be there (unless you tried that already and im not helping). I cant really think of anything else except to reinstall the drivers and maybe the os.

I personally have never had the update drivers option work my computers.

Yeah, I agree with SithMaster, as you should uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them. Also, reboot when it says too as waiting and installing another driver and then rebooting for both at once I would guess might cause this sort of problem. That is a wild guess though but maybe as both would need to access key files in your OS at the same time.

Another option would be to just try a reboot. Yeah it sounds crazy, but I have had problems with Vista where it would boot up and give me troubles and I would restart it and everything would work fine.

What Os are you running? I'm assuming xp. Like MoG and Sithmaster suggested try going to the device manager and then just remove the sound device as well as your networking interface device. Restart and xp should automatically locate the drivers and install the hardware again.

im running xp. i tried restarting and everything. ill try to remove the drivers and reinstall.

Yeah, try that. I would suggest removing the drivers, rebooting and then reinstalling to make sure that there would be nothing left over that might corrupt the new installation. If that doesn't work post back. Hopefully a reinstall will fix everything.

omfg, this morning, i got an error that said please reset cpu frequency in cmos so i went into the bios and turned on fail safe defaults but now sound doesnt work again. i uninstalled the drivers again but still no worky

Reset the cpu frequency? Did you overclock your pc? I would think that something like that would either be because of an unstable overclock or maybe the CPU has gone on the fritz. Of course I don't know anything about overclocking and just that it deals with the frequency, voltage and multiplier. I have no idea what they are but I have heard that messing with them can make a system unstable if you are not careful.

Could be that the cpu problem might have caused a something to be written overtop of the driver with an invalid command by its need to reset the frequency. Like the cpu was told to do one thing but the frequency issue caused something else to happen as the command would have been misinterpreted. That's a complete guess though I have no idea what that error could mean!

nope. i just loaded fail safe settings. would that have underclocked the processor? because my computer is extremely slow. i only got internet browser working cuz i took out 3 trojans. my antivirus is useless. this is how slow my computer is. i load up xp, i cant do anything for 10 minutes then the windows boot sound comes on and everything works. wtf! need helps

DM if you had trojans your best option is to reformat your drive and reinstall your OS start from scratch again. The best anti-virus in my opinion is the FREE AVG and use a firewall I recomend the FREE Zone alarm firewall.
However if you can't get your PC started you had better get a technican to look at it.

Actually I would suggest just a reformatting of the hard drive if you don't have anything important installed. It will save you money as unless its a hardware problem, the reformat would fix everything and I don't think a technician could do anything more. So you computer is that slow? Has it always been that slow? RAM is one quick and easy way to help speed up a pc from what I have heard. I have never installed more ram on a system that needed it.

AVG Free Edition is a great free antivirus available at free.grisoft.com. ZoneAlarm is a great firewall as well and is free too.

I would suggest finding out your hard drive model and go to the manufactures web site to get the disk maintenance tools or whatever they call it. That should have a program to write zeros to your whole hard drive which will clear all data off of the drive ensuring a clean install of XP. Once you get XP installed I would update all the drivers (get the installers before hand) and then install AVG and ZoneAlarm before you connect to the internet. Just make sure you download the installers off of a pc that isn't having problems to make sure any nasty viruses or whatnot don't manifest themselves into the installers.

Then I would suggest it is a hardware fault. A technician might be able to sort it if it just a c_rack in the printed circuit board or at least tell you what is wrong. If you have been overclocking the CPU could be fried. Overclocking is a dangerous practice, it makes your CPU run hotter than it is designed to run and can cause serious problems after a while.
