looking for a guitar program

I'm looking for a free program that will let me change the sound of my guitar when i play it thought the computer I.E. make it sound like a banjo or a keyboard or a chorus of voices.
can anyone help it must be free.

I don't think you can do that with a guitar, since each string is, well a string.
The way MIDI keyboards work is that each key is mapped to an interface which tells the computer which note is being played. I'd really be surprised if a guitar can do that, unless you have some sort of "MIDI guitar".

what I'm looking for is that i can plug in my guitar in to my computer and have it sound like a banjo or a keyboard or a chorus of voices. I know I can be done as I've seen it on stage.

I don't know the capabilities of such a tool, but it is often used with a guitar.

Ardentcrest...Zidane was correct. You need a guitar synthesizer. Unfortunately you won't find any free ones. The "free" way is to convert the audio from the guitar to MIDI then load into a VST synthesizer. That takes waayyyy too long and is a PITA to get it accurate.

Ahh...he is using a MIDI converter which is connected to his keyboard. The guitar notes are being translated to MIDI commands and instructing the keyboard to play the notes. He has a pedal in front of him which is changing the keyboard sounds. It's all hardware based. It's something like
this.

Audacity will let you change the sound in pretty much any way, with more effects than most effects pedals.
* Change the pitch without altering the tempo, or vice-versa.
* Remove static, hiss, hum, or other constant background noises.
* Alter frequencies with Equalization, FFT Filter, and Bass Boost effects.
* Adjust volumes with Compressor, Amplify, and Normalize effects.
* Other built-in effects include:
o Echo
o Phaser
o Wahwah
o Reverse

As for the voices effect, my friend has a $50 foot pedal that does that, but the voices are kinda robotic.
