Motherboard battery

I hear a beep on start-up, and everytime I boot, my date is reset. I know that the problem is that there is something wrong with the battery of my motherboard. Will my computer be broken fast? Or will it just keep running that same slow way, without being possible to even run Spore?
Please tell me that it will overheat or something soon (this has been for more than 4 months now).
But I also like to know the truth.

It won't do any damage but its a pain having to reset the date and time each time you start. Of course any trial programs you have will stop working and you won't be able to reinstall them without reinstalling windows. Why don't you just replace the battery they only cost a few cents and it's so simple to change.

Ok, let's hope my father doesn't realise this, or he would do this. What I was hoping was that it would eventually crash my pc and we'd had to buy a new one (this one's over 5 years old and real real slow).
BTW my harddrive (I think) makes a ticking sound while scanning for viruses. Back-up I guess?

I had both the problems.

A for the date/time buy a new battery. In India it does not cost much. Open up the cabinet and take out the battery with the help of a refill of an old pen and put the new battery in its place. That should fix the first problem.

As for the hard drive ticking my hard drive had stopped working once the ticking sound had started. I had to get a new 80 GB hard drive disposing my old 20 GB one. Bad luck I never took any backup. I recommend you take a backup of your important files. Get a new hard drive and fix it yourself seeing the manual. If you can't call an expert.

Please note that these were the problems I had faced and this is how I had fixed them. So try these at your own risk.

A ticking hard drive usually means it's about to give up the ghost. It just happened to me on my Sky dtv box, ticked away for about 2-3 weeks then just refused to work alltogether and no tv. Problem solved bu giving up Sky dtv and going free to air. As your man Sangha says backup NOW while you've still go the chance.

when you age, the keys become harder to see.
When you get a laser pointer shot in your eye and need new glasses because your old ones aren't good enough, that makes them harder to see too.
