For anyone interested the new Blender 2.5 Alpha has been released with a NEW IMPROVED GUI. Personally I cant get it to import anything, but its supposed to import 3ds & obj files I just seem to end up with the cube thing that it loads on startup. The gui does look a bit better but that's as far as I can get with it.
Anyway you can get it here:

I couldn't get .3ds or .obj models to import but I was able to import COLLADA (.dae) models. Also the .obj exporter works.
UPDATE: According to the link below, this new version of Blender uses Python 3.0 so most of the scripts need to be converted or rewritten.

HAAAAAAAAlejulah!
Bernie, try deleting the cube, the imported model may be inside and shrunk down.

Yeah zani tried all that no joy, it just doesn't work for obj and 3ds. But it is only the first alpha so things will change. Yes it does use python 3 so all the importers and exporters will need to be re-written AGAIN. That is a real PITA for the people that use it, every time they upgrade the scripts get broken. I will stick with Milkshape it works for me.

Incidentally, you can remap the hotkeys and style the interface how you want, so if you didn't like it's interface, you can change everything around.
