I might buy milkshape later, i found out that if i work at school it wipes the drives everytime so it keeps giving me free use of it.
its not extreamly convinient, cause i have to reinstall it and go find my textures and stuff, but it works for untill i can pay for it.

ok, i made a japiniese style straight sword.

ok, got a background image working and i am crusing right along.
this is a lot more fun then i ever thought it could be. :D
I have one problem though.
the program i used to use would allow you to mirror a selection around a point.
I am not sure i can do that here without reversing my selection.
i basically want to put the arms on the other side of the body while still having them face outward.
i am not quite sure what to do here.
here is a picture.
can some one point me to the correct information?

Ok guys, I am back from spring break.
I am planning on getting a serious 3d package and starting to put some real effort into my models.
I have 3 questions I am asking to determine what package I want to spend my money on.
Assume that I am as rich as Bill Gates and as skilled as the cod4 modelers.

1.
Why would a better 3d package make my models look better?

2.
Would brining my models from this post into a better 3d package make them look better without modification? (less angular?)

3.
List from best to worst, the top 3d applications on the market today.
A) by ease of use
B) by quality of work
C) by compatiblility with the rf system

thanks, i really hope this will help me to determine what I will be getting.

1)same reason as why you should get photoshop instead of paint. a better 3d modeller can create a better looking 3d model in less time.

2)huh? no, unless you add those fancy render effects and stuff

3)3ds max is compatible with rf. it is the top 3d modeler in the industry today. if you know how to use it you can see why. but honestly you cant rate how good your work is by the program, only the modeller.
maya is only compatilbe with rf if you use milkshape as the animator and the converter.

1) Yes, a better modeling program makes work flow easier and thus creativity easier and enables you to create better looking models.

2) No, unless you modify something it will look the same.

3)Top 3D applications: All prices in US Dollars

3DS Max - Industry standard.
Price: Max 2008 $3,495[*EDIT PRICE UPDATED, previously incorrect at $1,500]
Max 9 - $3,700

trueSpace - Well known graphics program that is focused mainly on graphic industry but with add-ons exports and saves to game industry formats. Recently the company that makes it(Caligari) was purchased by Microsoft. They also offer many good promotions through email if you download a trial version. They are always having good sales on their products.
Price: v7.5 -$595*
v6.6 - $395*
*Prices can be lower via email promotions

gameSpace - A game oriented version of trueSpace that is void of many of the advanced effects in trueSpace as it provides what is necessary for game design. This version suffers from a non-indepth animation system that most feel a third party plug in ($30USD) is required to easily create animations. Strangely, the calagari main site has de-linked the gameSpace pages from their main site. This might mean that the future of this program is uncertain?
Price: $299*
*Price can be lower via email promotions

Softimage|XSI - Widely used in game industry. Most notable is its free mod tool used for modding half-life2.
Price: $495 and rising sharply up.

Lightwave 3D - Used in the industry and associated with big games such as DoomIII and Burnout 4.
Price: $895 or $995
Upgrade from $495 or $595

ZBrush - Used in the game industry. Lesser known for games.
Price: v3.1 $595

Maya - [UPDATED] Used mostly for the movie industry and non interactive simulations. It does not support almost all of the formats that the game industry uses. It also costs as much if not more than 3DS MAX 9. It is used more by the game industry but not as much as 3DS Max.
[Prices updated:]
Price: Maya 2008 Complete: $1,995
Maya Unlimited 2008 : $4,995

Blender - Used by many people in all sorts of industries. Its free, but its interface is very hard to get used to.

All information that is bracketed is part of an Edit update to correct factual errors in this post. Sorry for the incorrect information.

How many users here use 3d's max?
Would anyone be able to help me if i got stuck?

also, i tried some better skins for the face.
Any comments?
There is really no face yet, just a scull with no meat on it (but skin i guess).
Need to develop scull structure a bit better around the eyes and such.

I would really like to get 3DS Max, but I don't know when or if I would actually get it.
